We are involved in a number of community projects that support sustainability in our community, including recycling and cleanup efforts, including efforts to clean up and preserve the Fourche Creek Watershed, and promote environmentally responsible practices that improve the quality of life of people all over Little Rock.
For the coming year, we are developing a number of programs designed to reorient young people to the natural world. People have gradually moved away from nature, and urban children are at risk of losing all connection to it. We are creating learning environments for young people in our community gardens, and are planning to create an interactive natural learning environment at our location on South Main, which will provide an opportunity for children to reconnect with nature in meaningful and accessible ways.
We also support the efforts of a number of area nonprofit groups dedicated to sustainability, including Audubon Arkansas, the Arkansas Sustainability Network, the Arkansas Earth Institute, and Keep Little Rock Beautiful, to name just a few. We do this through active participation with these and other groups, contributing leadership, space and other resources, and most importantly, the energy of our volunteers.
Green Mentoring
Village Commons’ volunteers and community partners are actively involved in initiatives that will ultimately provide job opportunities oriented to sustainability, including green building and landscaping techniques. Additionally, Village Commons hosts a wide array of workshops and community meetings to encourage and support green entrepreneurship and skill-building. We also provide affordable and accessible space to people starting new businesses, for purposes of working and meeting, and networking with other like-minded professionals. We are dedicated to encouraging interdependence as a means to achieving personal and organizational success, while reinforcing sustainability as a major goal.
