Environmental Justice
The cornerstone of Village Commons is environmental justice. Environmental justice calls for community residents to be empowered to participate in environmental policy design, enforcement and evaluation; rebuild their communities to provide equal access to waste management, renewable energy, clean water, weatherized homes and food sovereignty; as well as equal access to green job certification. Environmental justice affirms the right of each community to remove cultural, political, economic and environmental barriers to building a health community through community organizing and activism.
Economic Empowerment
Village Commons works with for-profit and non-profit organizations to provide youth with awareness of career opportunities that exist in the green economy. Youth will be given the opportunity to receive job skills required to become qualified to enter the green job market. These opportunities will empower you to become certified in urban gardening, home auditing, food preparation, waste management and renewable energy.
Community Empowerment
Village Commons works with community residents, organizers and activists to raise awareness of environmental issues in the community. Youth will receive the skills to educate residents on environmental policies that affect their communities. You will also receive the skills to advocate on behalf of residents to receive the resources available to rebuild their communities.
